Will the Culture Ever Change?

Viewpoint is an editorial written each day by The Daily Mississippian Editorial Board. The board meets daily and establishes a position after a majority opinion is formed.

It’s hard to believe it’s been three years since the university implemented its controversial strike system in conjunction with a new alcohol policy. And with the news of Delta Kappa Epsilon returning to its house on Fraternity Row, the alcohol policy that attempted to “change the culture” has its poster child back on campus.

It hasn’t even been a year since university police responded to a fire alarm at the DKE house, only to find alcohol in the house after no one answered the door.

Had the same situation occurred at another fraternity house on campus, chances are police would have found the same illegal liquid, but that doesn’t matter, especially considering we’re talking about the same fraternity two years removed from making national headlines when they allegedly kicked then-freshman Jeremiah Taylor out of an unauthorized party for being black.

DKE received a year’s probation from the Taylor incident, which was extended another year following the second strike in September of 2008.

As the remaining DKE members are able to go through recruitment this fall for the first time in two years, will the incoming class find a truly “changed culture?”

We support the steps the fraternity has taken as a part of the reinstatement process.

The addition of five member alumni members to the chapter advisory board for added judiciary oversight is a step in the right direction.

The alumni and those still associated with the fraternity after two years in obscurity have been through a lot of adversity, and will be committed to make sure there isn’t another strike worth offense.

So the DKE house will be on their best behavior for the foreseeable future, but the recruitment experience for many freshmen at other fraternities this fall will be the same as it was for their predecessors during the pre-alcohol policy days. For most students the alcohol policy has given written credence to the unwritten Solo cup policy, the culture surrounding still feels very much the same.

The university’s ranking among the national top party schools in Princeton Review’s annual list hasn’t changed - Ole Miss checked in at No. 2 in the latest addition.

The DKEs have been through enough turmoil, albeit self-induced, but they deserve to return to campus and reward those members who have weathered the storm.

As the university is still looking for substantial progress in its fight with alcohol, perhaps they should consider applying the same conditions given to DKE to all fraternities.

The editorial board has repeated lies and needs to recant this hateful attempt to smear a campus organization. I’ll bet that this is the group that pulled the campus ACT scores down to such a low level.

    Arrive alive at 25.
The unexpected death of a loved one due to a alcohol related incident effects everyone the same. It is a tragic loss of life and you feel that loss forever.
Friends don’t let that happen to you.
